If you are planning a trip to LEGOLAND California with kids, I wanted to share our real experience after visiting over spring break with our daughters, ages 4 and 9. This is not a generic travel guide. It is my honest mom review of what was worth it, what I would do again, and what I wish I knew before we went.
We spent one night at the LEGOLAND Hotel and one full day in the park, and overall it made for such a fun, easy family trip. LEGOLAND is very different from Disney or Universal, and that is actually part of the appeal. It feels smaller, more relaxed, and much more manageable with younger kids.

Is LEGOLAND California Worth It With Kids?
Yes, I do think LEGOLAND California with kids is worth it, especially if your children are on the younger side.
I would say ages 3 to 6 are the sweet spot, but my 9 year old still had a lot of fun. The biggest thing to know is that this is not Disney. If you go in expecting Disney-level rides, theming, or entertainment, you might be disappointed. But if you go in expecting a laid-back, kid-focused park with a lot of play areas, easy logistics, and a fun hotel experience, it is a great family trip.
That is actually what I like about it. It feels much more chill than a Disney day, and it is one of those trips that feels easier to pull off with little kids.
Our LEGOLAND California Hotel Stay
For this trip, we stayed one night at the original LEGOLAND Hotel in a Friends-themed suite on the first floor because we have two girls. We have also stayed at the Castle Hotel before, and both hotels have been really fun for our family.
If you are staying at one of the LEGOLAND hotels, it definitely adds to the overall experience for kids. The theming is what makes it feel magical. There are LEGO play areas in the lobby, themed rooms, a treasure hunt in the hotel, and little details made for younger kids that make the stay feel special.
If you are already making the drive and want this to feel like more than just a one-day park visit, I do think staying one night is worth considering.
Getting There + Easy Logistics
We drove in from Las Vegas, and it was about a 4.5 to 5 hour drive, which makes it a very doable long weekend trip for us.
We valet parked at the hotel, which we prefer because the price difference was not huge and it made everything easier. Since we stayed at the hotel, we also did not have to worry about paying for parking again on our park day.
That is one of the nice things about LEGOLAND California with kids. Compared to larger parks, the logistics are pretty simple.
What to Know Before You Go to LEGOLAND California With Kids
There are a few things I would absolutely keep in mind before your trip.
Buy Tickets in Advance
You can buy park tickets as part of a hotel package, and sometimes there is a little discount if you bundle a two-day park hopper. If you are adding other San Diego attractions to your trip, you can also look into the Go City pass.
Consider a Fast Pass if You Want to Avoid Long Waits
They recently opened a new area with two new rides, and if those are a priority, I would either rope-drop that part of the park or consider a Platinum FastPass. The Platinum option gives you unlimited fast pass access on regular rides plus one-time access on the newest rides.
Bring Your Stroller
Even though LEGOLAND is smaller than Disney, it is still a lot of walking, especially with younger kids. We have been bringing our double stroller on most of our bigger trips around the country and it has honestly been one of the best things we pack. I especially love this one because it has a 55-pound weight limit. My 9-year-old is clearly past that, but it still works great when she needs a break after a long day at the park. This is the double stroller we’ve been using on our trips for the past four years, and it’s still going strong.
The Food is Actually Pretty Good
This is one of the reasons we liked coming here when our youngest was a baby. They have good snack options, healthier food choices, and even baby and toddler-friendly foods if you need something easy.
The Weather is Usually Really Nice
We happened to go during a spring break heat wave, so it felt much hotter than expected, but in general Carlsbad weather is usually very moderate. Even on warmer days, the shade helps a lot.
Best Rides at LEGOLAND California for My Kids’ Ages
This is where I would really tailor expectations based on your kids’ ages.
Galactic Coaster
This was our favorite ride of the trip. It is the newest coaster, and you get to design your own spaceship before riding. It is indoors, super fun, and honestly felt like a mini version of Cosmic Rewind at Epcot, which we loved.
My 4 year old was able to ride it, which made it even better. The only downside is that the queue does not have enough shade, so if the wait is long, that part is not ideal.
The Dragon
This is always a family favorite and one of the more classic LEGOLAND rides.
NINJAGO
Both of my girls enjoy this one, and the area around it is fun too.
The ponies
Simple, but still one of those little-kid favorites.
Miniland
This is a must-do. The LEGO city builds are so impressive, and honestly the adults enjoy this part too.
The Best Play Areas at LEGOLAND California
One of the best things about LEGOLAND California with kids is that it is not just rides. There are so many places for kids to run, climb, and play.
Treehouse Playground
This is in the back of the park between Miniland and The Dragon. It is huge, has seating for parents, and only one way in and out, which makes it a great place to let kids burn energy.
NINJAGO Playground
There is a newer playground near the NINJAGO ride with giant slides and a gated layout, plus a few smaller play features nearby that my girls always want to stop at.
If your kids need a break from rides, these play areas are such a win.
Where We Like to Eat at LEGOLAND California
We always stop at the BBQ restaurant. For us, it is one of the easiest places to get a more filling meal with decent protein, plus mac and cheese for the kids.
That kind of balance is always a win for our family.
One Ride We Would Skip Next Time
The one ride we all agreed we never need to do again is G-Force.
It is one of those spinning rides that spins while going up and down, and we all started feeling motion sick pretty quickly. If your family loves spin rides, maybe you will feel differently, but for us this was a one-and-done.
Tips for Doing LEGOLAND California With Kids More Easily
Here are the biggest things that made the day easier for us:
- bring your stroller
- bring sunscreen and water bottles
- get at least one refillable souvenir cup
- let your kids use the play areas
- consider a fast pass if you do not want to rope drop
- check out the aquarium when you need a break from the sun
There is also a water park, but we have never done it, so I cannot really speak to whether that is worth adding.
Is the LEGOLAND Hotel Worth It?
Yes, I do think the LEGOLAND Hotel is worth it if your kids are young enough to really enjoy the theming.
It is expensive, but the hotel experience is what makes the trip feel extra special for kids. There are LEGO blocks everywhere, a treasure hunt that leads to a prize in your room, a separate bunk area for the kids, and thoughtful features for younger children like a step stool and toddler toilet seat attachment in the bathroom.
The pool also has floating LEGO bricks to play with, which my girls loved.
If you stay at the Castle Hotel instead, that one has a great outdoor playground, outdoor movie area, and another fun themed experience. We liked the Princess room there when we stayed before.
Both hotels include breakfast, which I would call decent but not amazing. It is your standard buffet setup, and it is definitely convenient.
Final Thoughts on LEGOLAND California With Kids
There is a good chance we will go back. We have been at least once a year for the last five years, and even though my oldest is starting to age out of it a little, we still had a really good time.
That is probably the best way I can sum up LEGOLAND California with kids. It is not the most thrilling theme park, but it is easy, fun, and very manageable for younger families. And sometimes that is exactly what you want.
If you are looking for a lower-stress family trip that still feels special, it is absolutely worth considering.
