We first spotted Pacific Terrace Hotel while walking the boardwalk during our first trip to San Diego in 2021. Admiring the beautiful boutique hotel sitting right on the beach, we said, “Next time, we’re staying there.”
We booked our first stay the following year, and we’ve come back every summer since. Over the years, we’ve loved sharing Pacific Terrace with the people we love. We brought my parents for a spring break trip so they could experience our favorite hotel, and this past Fourth of July, my brother-in-law and his kids joined us for an evening swim and a walk along the boardwalk. Every person we’ve brought here has left understanding exactly why we keep coming back.
Pacific Terrace has become part of our family’s San Diego tradition.
If you’ve ever walked the boardwalk in Pacific Beach, you’ve probably noticed the string of boutique hotels along the ocean. They’re all in an incredible location—rule number one of real estate is location, location, location, right? But Pacific Terrace has something special. It has the curb appeal that makes you slow down and look twice. It’s a diamond…and it just happens to sit on Diamond Street, which feels pretty fitting.
The hotel is only three stories tall, so it isn’t a towering beachfront resort. Instead, it feels welcoming and full of character. As you pull up to the valet, the hotel is on one side and the Pacific Ocean stretches out in front of you. Before you’ve even checked in, it already feels like vacation.

About the Hotel
Pacific Terrace Hotel sits at the north end of Pacific Beach. I truly think that’s one of the biggest reasons we keep coming back. You’re close enough to walk to all of the restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques that make Pacific Beach so much fun. But you’re tucked just far enough away that it feels a little quieter than the center of town.
One of our favorite things to do is leave the car parked for the entire trip. We grab coffee in the morning, walk the boardwalk for breakfast or ice cream, spend the afternoon at the beach or pool, and only hop in the car if we’re heading somewhere like La Jolla. Mission Beach is about a mile down the boardwalk, making it an easy walk or bike ride. Bird Rock and La Jolla are only about a 10-minute drive up the coast.
Pacific Terrace is a boutique hotel with just 73 guest rooms. It is a much more intimate feel than many of the larger beachfront resorts in San Diego. Most rooms offer some type of ocean view, whether it’s a full panoramic view or a partial view depending on the room category and location within the hotel.
Great Amenities
The amenities are another reason this hotel stands out. Guests have access to complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, sand toys, and bicycles. This makes it incredibly easy to spend the day on the beach without packing your entire garage. The hotel also offers valet parking, underground self-parking, room service, and poolside food and drinks. They also host seasonal events like Friday night fire shows during the summer. And my kids favorite, a heated oceanfront pool with a hot tub.
After a morning on the sand, there’s a outdoor rinse station/shower to wash off before heading back to your room. And the water is WARM. It’s one of those little details you don’t think about until you use it, and then you wonder why every beachfront hotel doesn’t have one.
Our Room
We’ve stayed at Pacific Terrace enough times that I’ve honestly lost track of all the different room types we’ve booked. My parents joined us for spring break one year, and they scored a third-floor room with some of the best views in the hotel. It’s been fun experiencing Pacific Terrace from different rooms over the years because it helped us figure out exactly which one works best for our family.
The first time we stayed, we booked the Partial Ocean View Junior Suite on the first floor. It had two incredibly comfortable queen beds, a dining table, and a small kitchenette. This larger suite made traveling with little kids so much easier. When we stepped out onto our first-floor patio, I remember thinking, “I’d happily wake up to this every morning.”
Then we noticed the corner suites.
Corner Family Suites
As we wandered around the property, we kept looking at these oversized patios with wide-open ocean views. We finally asked the front desk what room type they were. They told us they were the Family Suites, and we’ve booked that room ever since.
For our family, it’s the perfect layout. The living room has a pull-out sofa, TV, dining table, and kitchenette. The bedroom is tucked away behind a separate door with two queen beds. The bathroom is spacious with plenty of counter space, and there’s an additional water closet with the toilet and tub/shower. That bathroom setup makes getting everyone ready in the morning much easier.
When Sadie was little, there was even enough space to set up her toddler travel bed because I was convinced she was going to roll off the extra-high hotel beds. As the girls have gotten older, we’ve appreciated having separate spaces so someone can watch TV in the living room while another person winds down in the bedroom.
The kitchenette has everything we need for simple breakfasts or snacks, including a sink, dishes, and soap. We always tell ourselves we’ll cook more meals in the room, but with so many incredible restaurants just steps from the hotel, we usually end up grabbing tacos, pizza, burgers, or ice cream instead.
Grounds & Atmosphere
Pacific Terrace isn’t a sprawling beachfront resort, and that’s part of its charm. With just 73 rooms, the property feels intimate, relaxed, and easy to navigate. Everything is just a short walk away. Whether you’re heading to the pool, grabbing a coffee, or making your way down to the beach.
The hotel is designed in a U-shape around the pool deck, with open-air walkways overlooking the property. Along the way you’ll find a small gift shop, a computer with a printer, and the hotel’s restaurant tucked right in the center. The pool deck has plenty of lounge chairs and outdoor dining tables. The heated pool and hot tub with some of the best ocean views on the property.
One feature I absolutely love is that the entire property is gated with secure guest access. You can walk straight from your room to the pool, continue through the gate onto the Pacific Beach boardwalk. Spend a few hours at the beach, and come right back without ever needing to walk around to the front entrance. It makes beach days so much easier. Especially when you’re carrying chairs, towels, sand toys, and trying to convince your kids that it’s actually time to leave the ocean.
Even though you’re right in the middle of Pacific Beach, the hotel somehow manages to feel peaceful. Mornings are quiet with people sipping coffee on their balconies. Afternoons are filled with families enjoying the pool. Evenings bring that cool ocean breeze as everyone gathers to watch another San Diego sunset.
Pool & Amenities
The pool at Pacific Terrace isn’t the biggest hotel pool you’ll ever see, but it’s one of my favorites. The size has never mattered because it’s everything around it that makes it special. You have the Pacific Ocean stretching out in front of you, people strolling along the boardwalk, surfers catching waves, and some of the prettiest sunsets you’ll ever watch from a pool chair.
I could happily spend an entire afternoon there. Grab a lounge chair or one of the shaded cabanas—no reservations or extra fees required—order a snack and a drink from the poolside staff, pull out a good book, and let the kids splash in the pool while you soak up the ocean breeze. It is one of those rare places where everyone in the family is happy at the same time, and if you’re a parent, you know how magical that feels.
Pacific Terrace also includes so many little extras that make packing for a beach vacation easier. Guests can borrow complimentary bikes to cruise the boardwalk, and the hotel provides beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, sand toys, and even those sturdy shovels that somehow build the best sand castles. We pack our little beach tent because it’s perfect for younger kids and beach naps, but almost everything else we need is waiting for us at the hotel.
The service is another reason we keep coming back. Our room has always been cleaned daily, and every evening housekeeping stops by for turndown service and leaves little chocolate truffles on the pillows. It became one of Sadie’s favorite parts of the day, and she was always the first one racing into the room to see if the chocolates had arrived.
It’s those little details that make Pacific Terrace feel less like a hotel and more like a place that genuinely wants you to relax and enjoy your vacation.
Dining
Pacific Terrace offers several dining options without ever leaving the property. You can enjoy room service, order food and drinks poolside, or dine at the hotel’s restaurant. One thing we’ve always appreciated is their partnership with Duck Dive, the restaurant right next door. Even if you’re relaxing by the pool or winding down in your room, you can order from Duck Dive and the hotel staff will bring it right to you.
During one of our first stays after COVID, Pacific Terrace’s kitchen was still closed, so Duck Dive was the only dining option available through the hotel. We ended up eating there several times that trip, and now it’s become one of our favorite traditions whenever we stay. Even with the hotel’s kitchen fully open again, we’re so glad they kept that partnership because Duck Dive is one of our favorite restaurants in Pacific Beach.
One of the biggest reasons we love staying at Pacific Terrace is that you can park your car when you arrive and barely need it again until checkout. Within just a few minutes’ walk you’ll find coffee shops, breakfast spots, pizza, burgers, date-night restaurants, dessert, and just about anything else you’re craving.
Some of our favorite spots within walking distance include Duck Dive (don’t skip the duck fat fries), Prince Street Pizza, The Baked Bear, Drift Coffee, Breakfast Republic, and The Grass Skirt. We’ve also discovered some incredible restaurants in La Jolla, Downtown San Diego, Little Italy, and other nearby neighborhoods over the years.

Why We Keep Coming Back
Every year when we pull into the valet at Pacific Terrace, it feels like vacation starts the moment we hand over the keys. We’re greeted with a smile, the ocean is right in front of us, and within a few minutes we’re unpacked and walking the boardwalk. It never gets old.
Unbeatable Location
The location is a huge part of why we love it so much. We can walk to coffee in the morning, grab lunch after a few hours at the beach, end the evening with ice cream, and never think twice about finding parking. Mission Beach is an easy walk down the boardwalk, and La Jolla and Bird Rock are only a short drive away when we want to explore somewhere new. It really feels like you’re perfectly positioned to enjoy all of our favorite parts of San Diego.
The pool has become one of our favorite places to spend an afternoon. The girls swim for hours while I read a book, order a snack, and watch the surfers, the boardwalk, and eventually the sunset over the ocean. Friday nights during the summer are even more fun when the hotel hosts its fire show, and everyone gathers outside to watch.
California Feeling
More than anything, it’s the feeling this place gives us.
It’s waking up to the sound of the waves.
Opening the balcony door and feeling that cool ocean breeze before the sun warms everything up.
Walking the beach looking for shells with the girls.
Watching surfers catch waves while we sip our morning coffee.
Spending the entire day outside and falling asleep completely exhausted in the best possible way.
There is something about being here that makes everyone seem a little happier. People are outside riding bikes, walking the boardwalk, playing volleyball, surfing, or simply enjoying the sunshine. It’s the kind of place that reminds you to slow down and soak it all in.
Every year we leave with our next Fourth of July trip already on the calendar. By the time we’re halfway home to Las Vegas, the conversation has usually shifted to, “Okay…but should we come back before then?”
I think that’s the best review I can give. We’ve stayed at Pacific Terrace year after year because it never feels like just another hotel stay. It feels like the place where our family’s summer memories are made.
Before You Book
There are a few things worth knowing before you book, but none of them have ever kept us from coming back year after year.
Beach Access
The first is beach access. Even though Pacific Terrace sits directly on the boardwalk, the hotel is perched on a small bluff above the beach. To get down to the sand, you’ll use the wooden staircase located right next to the hotel. It’s only a minute or two, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re traveling with a wagon full of beach gear or anyone who has trouble with stairs.
The stretch of beach directly in front of the hotel is also designated as a surf beach because the waves can be stronger. You can absolutely walk into the water and play along the shoreline, but if your kids are hoping to swim or boogie board, you’ll want to walk a few minutes north to the designated swim area where the lifeguard flags are posted. We usually end up walking that direction anyway, and it’s never felt inconvenient.
Limited Quantities Of Rooms
Because Pacific Terrace is a boutique hotel, the larger Family Suites are limited. If you have your heart set on one of those rooms, I would book as early as you can. We usually reserve our Fourth of July trip about a year in advance because it’s one of the busiest weeks of the year in San Diego, and those larger rooms tend to go quickly.
One tip from a mom who’s packed this trip more times than she can count: take advantage of the complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, and sand toys the hotel provides. It saves so much room in the car. The only beach item we still bring is our little pop-up beach tent. When the girls were younger, it was perfect for naps, snack breaks, and getting out of the sun for a while. We also toss the kids’ scooters and a ball in the trunk, and that’s really all we need.
One last warning…Pacific Terrace has completely spoiled us. Every time we start looking at other hotels in Pacific Beach, we end up comparing everything back to Pacific Terrace. At this point, I think they’ve ruined us in the very best way.
Who It’s Best For
Pacific Terrace is the kind of hotel that works for just about every stage of life, which is one of the reasons we keep coming back. We’ve watched couples enjoy quiet mornings on their balconies, families spending all day at the pool, groups of friends celebrating together, and even a bachelor party hanging out over Fourth of July weekend. (That one surprised me too. 😂)
For us, it’s the perfect family hotel because there’s something for everyone. The girls love bouncing between the beach and the pool, my husband loves being able to walk everywhere, and I’m perfectly happy sitting by the pool with a good book while listening to the waves. Nobody ever seems bored here.
One of my favorite things about returning year after year is seeing familiar faces. There are families we’ve recognized from previous summers, and there’s even a large group that looks like they’ve turned their annual trip into a family reunion. It reminds me that we aren’t the only ones who have made Pacific Terrace part of our traditions.
If your ideal vacation includes morning walks on the boardwalk, afternoons by the pool, evenings spent watching the sunset, and incredible restaurants within walking distance, I have a feeling you’ll fall in love with Pacific Terrace the same way we did. It has become part of our family’s traditions, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it became part of yours too.

There are vacations you remember, and then there are places that become part of your family’s story. Pacific Terrace has become both for us.
It’s where we’ve celebrated Fourth of July, watched our girls grow up playing in the sand, introduced my parents to one of our favorite places, and spent countless mornings walking the boardwalk with coffee in hand before the rest of the beach woke up.
Every trip feels familiar in the best possible way. We know exactly where we’ll grab breakfast, which ice cream shop we’ll end up at after dinner, and where the girls will run the second they see the pool. Those little traditions are what keep bringing us back year after year.
There are certainly larger resorts in San Diego. There are hotels with more amenities and flashier pools. But for our family, Pacific Terrace has something that’s much harder to find.
If you’re looking for a beachfront hotel where you can slow down, spend your days outside, walk almost everywhere, and make memories that your family will talk about long after vacation is over, I can’t recommend Pacific Terrace enough.
For us, it feels like home.
