If you’ve ever searched for hotels in La Jolla, chances are you’ve seen the iconic pink hotel sitting above the ocean cliffs.
La Valencia Hotel — often called “The Pink Lady” — is one of the most well-known luxury hotels in Southern California, and after staying here twice, I completely understand why people love it.
Between the ocean views, walkable location, classic California atmosphere, and elevated-but-relaxed vibe, this is one of those hotels that instantly makes your trip feel special.
We’ve stayed here both as a couple for an anniversary getaway and as a family with our kids, and both experiences were incredible for completely different reasons.
Over the years, La Jolla has quietly become part of our family’s annual coastal trip tradition. We usually split our trips between Pacific Beach and La Jolla, and adding a night at La Valencia has become one of our favorite ways to slow down, walk through the village, eat great food, and spend time together by the ocean.

Quick Hotel Snapshot

We’ve now stayed here twice — once as a couple and once as a family — which has given us a really good feel for the overall experience across different seasons of life.

- Best For: Couples, girls’ trips, and elevated family vacations
- Vibe: Classic California luxury
- Walkable: Yes — restaurants, shopping, ocean views, and sea lions nearby
- Parking: Valet only
- Pool: Yes
- Ocean Views: Incredible
- Family Friendly: Yes, but more upscale than kid-focused
First Impressions of La Valencia Hotel

La Valencia immediately feels special the second you walk in.
The hotel has that classic upscale California boutique hotel feel — elegant without feeling overly formal or stuffy. The iconic pink exterior, ocean air, beautiful landscaping, and historic charm make it feel timeless in the best way.
And you know that signature luxury hotel smell when you first walk into the lobby? It has that too.
The service was amazing both times we stayed. The valet staff was attentive and quick, the hotel felt extremely well-maintained, and every interaction felt elevated without feeling pretentious.
One detail I loved? They even had little water bowls set out for dogs near the entrance, which was such a thoughtful touch.
The property itself is built into the hillside, so the layout is very unique, with multiple levels connected by stairs and elevators. It’s part of the charm of staying here, but it’s definitely something to know before booking.
Most room categories do have elevator access. In fact, 112 of the hotel’s 114 rooms are accessible by elevator. Because the property is historic and spread throughout the hillside, a small number of suites may still require a few stairs, depending on the route you take.
When we stayed in the Oceanfront Villa, we chose to use some stairs because it was the easiest path to our suite, while the tower room with the kids felt especially convenient for strollers and luggage. The elevators are also smaller because it’s an older historic property, but honestly, that’s part of what gives the hotel so much character.
This is one of those hotels where you leave already planning your next trip back.
Why the Location of La Valencia Hotel is So Good

Location matters — and this hotel absolutely nails it.
La Valencia sits on the cliffs overlooking the ocean right in the heart of La Jolla Village, which means you can park your car and walk almost everywhere.
That’s a huge part of why we love staying here.
You can easily walk to:
- restaurants
- coffee shops
- boutiques
- bookstores
- toy stores
- ocean viewpoints
- beaches
- and the famous sea lions nearby
One of our favorite things to do is walk down toward the coastline and watch the sea lions with our girls. They absolutely love them.
Yes… They’re loud.
Yes… They smell.
But they’re also adorable and somehow become a core family memory every single trip.
Every trip, we end up back here watching the sea lions, walking the coastline, and wandering through La Jolla Village together. It’s become one of those family traditions the girls immediately get excited about when we start planning our trips.

There’s a large grassy park area nearby where kids can run around, and you can also walk down closer to the water along the coastal paths to enjoy the ocean views and sea air.
The walkability here completely changes the feel of the trip. Instead of constantly driving and parking, you actually get to slow down and enjoy La Jolla itself.
You can walk directly out the front of the hotel into La Jolla Village for restaurants, coffee shops, and shopping, or walk out past the pool and villa area through the gated key-card entrance and be right across the street from the park and coastline paths.
We’ve discovered some of our favorite restaurants, coffee shops, and little stores simply because we were walking around the village from the hotel.
Another touch we loved: the hotel offers golf cart rides within about a mile of the property. We used it a few times going to dinner, and it made the experience feel even more special.
Our Room at La Valencia Hotel
We’ve stayed at La Valencia twice:
- once in a tower suite with our kids
- and once in an Oceanfront Villa for an anniversary trip
Both rooms were beautiful, but they offered very different experiences.
The tower suite worked extremely well for our family because it had more space. Our suite included:
- a separate living area
- pull-out couch
- king bed
- beautiful ocean views
- and a spacious bathroom
The Oceanfront Villa felt much more romantic and private. It had:
- a cozy fireplace
- large bedroom
- oversized bathroom
- balcony overlooking the park and the ocean
- incredible coastal atmosphere
The tower rooms generally have higher panoramic ocean views, while the villas feel more intimate and tucked into the hillside.
Both stays felt luxurious and comfortable in different ways.
This hotel photographs beautifully. If you love capturing travel content, there are gorgeous photo opportunities all over the property.
What We Loved Most About Staying Here

The Ocean Views
We are definitely the type of travelers who will always choose the room with the view, and La Valencia absolutely delivers on that.
Both times we stayed here, we had beautiful ocean views that completely elevated the experience. The tower rooms tend to have more panoramic views because they sit higher above the coastline, while the villas feel a little more private and tucked into the hillside.
Either way, waking up to the ocean, hearing the waves, and watching the sunset from the property are among the best parts of staying here.
Walkability

This is one of the biggest reasons we would keep coming back here.
Being able to park your car and explore on foot completely changes the feel of a vacation. Instead of constantly driving, parking, and rushing around, you actually get to slow down and enjoy the town.
From La Valencia, you can easily walk to:
- restaurants
- coffee shops
- boutiques
- bookstores
- toy stores
- beaches
- ocean viewpoints
- and the sea lions
During our anniversary trip, Corey and I even walked to Lifetime Fitness one morning before breakfast, then grabbed coffee and pastries in the village afterward. If you’re traveling with kids, just note that this particular Lifetime location doesn’t have a kids’ club.
Our girls absolutely loved walking around La Jolla Village and visiting the toy store nearby. We also loved being able to casually wander into little restaurants and shops we may not have discovered otherwise.
The location truly makes the entire trip feel more relaxing.
The Pool Area
The pool area has that classic upscale California vibe.
It feels elegant and relaxing without being overly crowded or chaotic. We never had trouble finding lounge chairs, and the poolside service made it easy to spend an afternoon just slowing down and enjoying the weather.
There’s also a hot tub, beautiful landscaping, and plenty of sunny seating areas around the pool deck.
It’s definitely more of a relaxing, luxury pool atmosphere than a large resort-style waterpark experience, which matched the hotel’s vibe perfectly.
The Overall Atmosphere
This hotel somehow manages to feel:
- luxurious
- relaxed
- historic
- coastal
- and welcoming all at the same time
The service was consistently excellent both times we stayed. The valet staff was attentive, the restaurants were fantastic, and even little touches like the golf cart rides to dinner made the experience feel extra special.
La Valencia has that “old California” charm that’s hard to replicate now.
It feels elevated without feeling intimidating.
Is La Valencia Hotel Family Friendly?

Yes — La Valencia is family-friendly.
But I would describe it as an elevated family hotel rather than a kid-focused resort.
When we stayed here with our girls, we had a wonderful experience. Our tower suite worked very well for our family and made it easy to use our stroller throughout the property.
Because the hotel is built into the hillside, the layout includes multiple levels, elevators, and some stairs throughout the property. Most rooms do have elevator access — in fact, 112 of the hotel’s 114 rooms are accessible by elevator — but if accessibility, stroller access, or avoiding stairs is especially important for your stay, I would recommend calling the hotel directly before booking so the reservations team can help guide you to the best room category for your needs.
The pool area is beautiful, but this is not a resort with:
- water slides
- kids clubs
- lifeguards
- or large family activity areas
It’s much more of a relaxed luxury atmosphere.
That being said, our girls loved:
- the sea lions
- walking around La Jolla Village
- riding in the golf cart
- exploring the coastline
- and visiting the nearby shops
I’ve stayed here both with kids and without kids, and both experiences were amazing for different reasons.
Things to Know Before Booking
There are a few things worth knowing before you book your stay at La Valencia Hotel.
Parking Is Valet Only
The hotel offers valet parking only. There are a few temporary loading spaces in front of the hotel so you can unload luggage before the valet parks your car nearby.
Because the hotel is in the heart of La Jolla Village, this setup makes sense.
It’s a Historic Property

La Valencia is one of California’s original historic hotels, and part of its charm is that it still retains its classic character.
The hotel has been beautifully updated, but you’ll still notice:
- smaller elevators
- unique room layouts
- multiple levels
- stairs throughout the property
Personally, I think this adds to the experience — but if you prefer ultra-modern large resorts, it’s something to keep in mind.
Room Sizes Vary
Some rooms at La Valencia are smaller than others.
Both of our rooms were spacious because we booked upgraded categories, but if space matters to you, I would definitely compare room types carefully before booking.
Our tower suite had:
- separate living space
- pull-out couch
- king bed
- larger layout overall
The Oceanfront Villa felt more intimate and romantic with:
- fireplace
- oversized bathroom
- private atmosphere
- beautiful coastal views
The Area Stays Busy
Because the location is so good, the surrounding area remains active throughout the day and into the evening.
There are always people walking around La Jolla Village, especially near restaurants and the coastline.
For us, this added to the area’s energy and charm.
Dining & Restaurants Nearby
One of the best parts of staying at La Valencia is how many amazing restaurants are within walking distance.
We’ve eaten at the hotel restaurants multiple times — both while staying here and even when staying elsewhere nearby.
The Whaling Bar

This is one of our favorites.
The cocktails are excellent, the atmosphere is beautiful, and I’m still convinced they have one of the best Caesar salads I’ve ever had.
Their house-made “twinkies” are basically cheese-filled croutons… no other Caesar salad compares now.
It’s that good.
Breakfast on the Patio

The ocean-view breakfast patio is absolutely beautiful in the morning.
Sitting outside with coffee, overlooking the coastline, is one of those simple vacation moments that just feel special.
Other Restaurants We Love Nearby

Some other La Jolla favorites:
- Brockton Villa
- Parakeet Cafe
- Better Buzz Coffee
- Richard Walker’s Pancake House
- The Marine Room
- Living Room Cafe
- Marisi
- Paradisaea (featured in the Michelin Guide)
La Jolla is one of those places where you can genuinely spend an entire trip just walking around, eating, and enjoying the ocean views.
One of our favorite memories was finding a chocolate chip cookie cream-filled croissant at Parakeet Cafe during one of our anniversary trips. We loved it so much we went back the next morning and bought extras to bring home to the girls and my parents. We still talk about that pastry every time we visit La Jolla.
Paradisaea was one of the newer restaurants we tried during our last trip, and it ended up being such a fun experience. We even brought the girls with us, which honestly sums up our travel style perfectly — elevated experiences, but still family-friendly. I ordered the Paradisaea margarita, and Corey told me to “Bruce Wayne it,” which upgraded it to Don Julio 1942 and Grand Marnier served in a Baccarat glass. It felt very La Jolla in the best way.
Food is honestly one of our favorite parts of traveling together as a family. If you love burgers, be sure to check out our list of best burgers in Las Vegas.

Is La Valencia Hotel Worth It?
For us, yes.
La Valencia is expensive, but for us, it has absolutely been worth it both times we stayed.
If you value:
- beautiful ocean views
- luxury accommodations
- walkability
- excellent restaurants
- classic California atmosphere
- and a slower coastal vacation vibe
then this hotel is absolutely worth considering.
This is one of the few hotels we’ve revisited because the experience itself feels memorable — not just the room.
For Couples

This hotel is PERFECT for an anniversary trip or romantic coastal getaway.
The atmosphere feels:
- upscale
- relaxing
- intimate
- and very classic California
There are amazing restaurants nearby, beautiful ocean walks, and plenty of places to slow down and enjoy quality time together.
If you love traveling as a couple and want to stay at a 5-star resort in Mexico, check out our review of La Blanc.
For Families
I also genuinely think this works well for families who want a more elevated coastal trip.
Our girls loved:
- the sea lions
- the shops
- the coastal walks
- the golf cart rides
- and the relaxed atmosphere
It’s definitely more refined than something like Legoland Hotel, but that’s part of what we enjoyed about it.
If your kids are obsessed with LEGOLAND like ours are, you can also read our full LEGOLAND California guide and nearby Carlsbad recommendations.
Who I Would Recommend This Hotel For

I would recommend La Valencia Hotel for:
- couples getaway trips

This hotel feels luxurious without feeling stuffy, which is my favorite kind of luxury.
